Are you looking for a job in an oil company? If yes, appear for GATE. Taking a cue from Indian Oil Corp (IOC), several other public-sector oil companies, except Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), are now hiring engineers in entry-level positions based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Last year, IOC had hired about 200 engineers based on their GATE score.
Experts believe hiring via GATE score will help to make the recruitment process transparent, efficient and will keep politicians and bureaucrats at bay who try to influence hiring decisions.
Other benefits of hiring engineers on the basis of GATE scores is that it is a more contemporary examination and checks applicant's knowledge of basics and fundamentals rather than his ability to memorise.
Speaking on the uses of this hiring method, Dr V Vizia Saradhi, director (human resources), HPCL, told The Economic Times, said, "This is a more transparent system. We are considering adopting this (IOC's) mode."
However, certain oil companies, like ONGC, feels that this system is not suitable to hire people of non-engineering backgrounds in fields such as HR, Finance, Geophysical Sciences and Geology.
