If all goes according to the plans, Pune will
be home to some industry-sponsored
programmes in engineering. The University of Pune is in talks
with representatives from the industry to introduce an integrated
M.Tech, Ph.D course in engineering studies that will be sponsored
by the industry.
The main purpose of this programme is to have an integrated five-year post-B.Tech programme that will lead to M.Tech as well as Ph.D degree. Theis programme would be based on industry-oriented research.
UoP authorities are hoping to launch this programme from the next academic year once they get a nod from varsity's academic council.
Speaking to The Times of India, UoP vice-chancellor R K Shevgaonkar said, "We have already initiated discussion with various bodies, including the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture, the Computer Society of India and even corporates like IT giant Persistent, where I recently delivered a talk on the issue."
However, one should note that despite having about 50 post-graduation departments, the university still does not have an independent department for engineering and pharmacy branches.
